New Exhibit at the Burien Community Center: Melissa Ponder

Portrait by Melissa Ponder

The Burien Community Center will present the works of photographer Melissa Ponder from October 4th to the end of November, 2016.

The in.dig.e.nize project was initiated by Tracy Rector and Melissa Ponder on Indigenous Peoples Day 2015 at Daybreak Star Cultural Center in Seattle. Seattle based filmmaker and activist Tracy Rector focused on sound, video and story. South King County based photographer Melissa Ponder focused on the still in.dig.e.nize portrait series.

These images offer a glimpse into the diversity of men, women, Two Spirits, and children that make up the Urban Native community of the greater Seattle/Duwamish Land community.

After more than 20 years of professionally serving and advocating for youth, senior citizens, low income and immigrant communities around education and health disparities, in 2005, Melissa began to focus on photography creatively and professionally. Her community involvement has included King County Civil Rights Commission, District 5 Representative, KCLS Des Moines/Woodmont Library Board member, South King Council of Human Services Board member. She is a member of Professional Photographers of America.

The Burien Community Center is open Monday-Thursday, 8:30am-8:00pm, Fridays 8:30am-5:00pm, and Saturdays 8:00am-noon. For more information please call Burien Parks and Recreation at 206-988-3700.
