New Exhibit at the Burien Community Center: Michael Dinning

Phone Lines #2, by Michael Dinning

The Burien Community Center is hosting Spokane artist Michael Dinning until the end of September.

Michael’s artwork is inspired by a wide variety of sources, from Italian Renaissance to Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism to Fauvism. His primary artistic focus now is creating mixed media screens and paintings.

The artist has long been intrigued by screens, and the idea of trying to depict things that are hidden. He utilizes a variety of underpainting techniques, to give depth to the painted image, and as a way to give a nod to the complexity that lies under a common skin. He enjoys using a variety of mediums, from acrylic paint and canvas to nuts, bolts, hooks and wire. He also likes to bring in other visual elements, such as backlighting and found objects, as a way to further his artistic vision. He often includes writing in his pieces, and uses the writing process to generate imagery and to focus his vision for a piece. He also likes to show all of the hardware used to construct the artwork, as well as the parts of the piece that are not commonly seen in a finished piece. In this way those things normally hidden during the creative process become part of the finished artwork, hopefully furthering the artistic aims of the piece, as well as grounding the artwork in the constructive process. Michael has always felt that painting and sculpture are, along with the creative vision, something to be built, and his love of that constructive process drives his work as much as realizing a coherent, complex and compelling artistic expression.

The Burien Community Center is open Monday-Thursday from 8:30am-8:00pm, Friday 8:30am-5pm, and Saturday 8:00am-noon. For more information please call 206-988-3700.
